Preplacement Exams

Industry has shown significant interest in the use of Preplacement (post-offer) Screening as a means for reducing workers' compensation premiums. Evaluating an employee prior to placement at a specific work site can detect preexisting conditions that might predispose the employee to injury.

WorkRite Safety utilizes the Biomechanical Stress Index (BSI) in the performance of preplacement exams. The BSI has proven to be invaluable in determining if an individual is at a low, medium or high risk to suffering a disabling lower back injury. BSI exams are quantitative, and capable of determining risk based on an evaluation of the job description (they are job-specific). This exam assists with appropriate placement of a new hire, or in disqualification if so determined base on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

Functional Testing such as lifting testing and dynamometer testing can also be performed in conjunction with a pre-placement screening examination to help determine the new hires physical capability to perform essential job functions.

Return to Work Exams

A Return-to-Work physical examination determines the appropriateness of returning the injured worker to work again, and to better define light or modified-duty work recommendations. Our goal is the same as your goal - to see the injured worker returned to work in a timely manner that facilitates a safe and productive RTW process.

An examination of this nature is also appropriate for the individual who has sustained a non-work related injury or illness. Our RTW examination often includes a drug screening as a very useful medical management tool.

Respirator Usage Exams

The medical evaluation for respirator use is a requirement of OSHA with a focus on protecting the health of the individual who uses a respirator.  It can include the use of the “Respirator Usage Qualification Questionnaire” with a review of responses to interview questions, and possibly spirometry and a physical examination to provide clearance for respirator use.

Respirator Surveillance Exams

Respirator surveillance exams are required by OSHA for individuals who use respirators and are exposed to regulated toxic chemicals.  It is an exam to determine if the worker is exhibiting signs or symptoms associated with exposure to these chemicals or compounds and requires reporting to both the employer and employee with any recommendations for respirator use, specialist referral or methods to limit exposure for each.  Although there exist numerous surveillance programs defined by OSHA, our facility provides these services for three specifically:
  • Hexavalent Chromium - a chemical found in paint and plating;
  • Crystalline Silica - a chemical found in stone dust and concrete in general industry, and in the construction and maritime industries.
Exams and testing may vary based on the requirements of each OSHA standard but may include Pulmonary Function Testing (Spirometry), laboratory testing, or chest x-rays based on the standard.

Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV) Exams

Although not mandated by OSHA, these exams have more guidelines established by NIOSH and are becoming more popular as a method of reducing accidents assopciated with PIV usage. PIV exams are performed on workers that use forklifts, walkie's, high lift, low lift, etc. They are typically performed annually, but because there is no OSHA mandate, re-eexamination can vary from 1 to 3 years. NIOSH has established guidelines for a PIV examination that emphasize vision (including depth perception), hearing, vitals and a systems review. Careful consideration of medication side effects is also important.
