Power Industrial Vehicle (PIV) Exams

Although not mandated by OSHA, these exams have more guidelines established by NIOSH and are becoming more popular as a method of reducing accidents associated with PIV usage.

PIV exams are performed on workers that use forklifts, walkies, high lift, low lift, etc. They are typically performed annually, but because there is no OSHA mandate, re-examination can vary from 1 to 3 years.

NIOSH has established guidelines for a PIV examination that emphasize vision (including depth perception), hearing, vitals and a systems review. Careful consideration of medication side effects is also important.
